Coming full circle

It’s Indigenous History Month! Meet Dallas Legare. He’s a member of the Red River Métis Nation and has been Scimar’s Director of Operations since 2018 (although his experience with the company’s research dates back decades prior).

Dallas didn’t always plan to become a scientist. After a government hiring freeze in the 70s put his plans to become a social worker on hold, he went back to school to become a lab technologist, thanks to funding from the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan.

After graduating, he applied for a position under Dr. W. Wayne Lautt in 1979, and the two instantly hit it off. For the next 30 years, they worked together, advancing the research that Scimar is founded on.

Dallas says he owes his success to his education, adding that the financial support he received from the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan has sent his life in an amazing direction.

“That funding provided me the opportunity of education and employment, and everything that came out of it,” says Dallas.

“What we’re doing now with Scimar allows me the opportunity to pay back my community with the knowledge that we’re discovering — especially regarding how type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance affects First Nations people. My education allows me the opportunity to work towards helping not only them, but every diabetic. It allows me the opportunity to pay something back to the people who gave me my start.”
